4 Common Winter Plumbing Problems & How to Fix them

frozen pipes

Your homes and, consequently, its plumbing systems are susceptible to a range of common problems during the winter months. Air temperatures drop and so do water temperatures. Ice forms and pipes freeze. Your heating is being frequently used and your hot water is ever in demand. No one wants to find themselves without heating or hot water in the winter months, which is why we have outlined the most common winter plumbing problems and how you can prevent or fix them.

1. Frozen Pipes

During the winter months in Essex, temperatures can reach below freezing which puts pipes at risk of freezing. You can prevent this with proper insulation around your pipes. However, if your pipes do end up freezing you should shut off the main water supply straight away to avoid pressure building up and bursting the piped. In the event that you have had to turn your water supply off, call CES emergency plumbers and we will be with you as soon as possible.

2. Broken Water Heater

Water heaters have their work cut out in the winter months. You need to make sure that the water gauge is set high enough but should never be above 140 degrees. The best way to prevent a broken water heater is to have it serviced in preparation for winter. However, if you’re still shivering in the shower then call out CES plumbers and we will be able to help you out.

3. Water Line Break

Standing water can freeze when it’s cold, and create ice blockage in your pipes, which can cause pressure to build up and cause a leak or burst pipe over time. We recommend using shut-off valves to keep your plumbing systems running smoothly. For more information give us a call and we can give you more professional advice or come out to have a look.

4. Grease build up

The holidays have passed and you might have poured more than water down the drain. You should never pour grease, oil or coffee grounds down the sink if you want to ensure a clog free pipe. In the event that you have poured some durkey grease down the drain, most drain unblocking products will be able to unclog your drain as a temporary fix. However, for a permanent solution seek the expertise of CES plumbers.
